Akane Tendo is the youngest of [Soun Tendo](https://anilist.co/character/9215/Soun-Tendo)'s three daughters and one of the heirs to the Anything Goes School of Martial Arts.

While Akane is generally shown as compassionate and helpful towards anyone in trouble, she's also a vulnerable, stubborn, relentless, and very short-tempered girl. She frequently becomes angry and jealous, and is apt to hit Ranma, often a reaction to Ranma's own bad traits like his smart mouth and insensitivity, but also due to rampant paranoia and willingness to generally believe the worst of the situations she finds him in. Despite her temper, Akane has a more prominent gentle side. She has come to the aid of her rivals, even consistently feeling compassion towards or helping people who try to make her life miserable. Most of her flaws can be attributed to insecurities about her own attractiveness, skill, or lack of traditionally feminine talents.

Training with Genma at Jusenkyou in China, Ranma was thrown into a spring called Nyanniichuan. He emerged as a young girl, according with the spring's curse. When splashed with hot water, he changes back to a boy, but when splashed with cold to room temperature water, he turns into a girl again. As for our well-built 16-year-old hero/heroine, the martial arts is his life. He also possesses a rather large and easily wounded ego, believing his physical strength to be his only virtue. Whenever his pride is damaged, Ranma feels the need to rectify the situation, even when it's not necessarily in his best interest to do so.

Genma Saotome is very much like his son, [Ranma.](https://anilist.co/character/668/Ranma-Saotome) He is somewhat arrogant when it comes to his martial arts abilities, which he rarely showcases due to cowardice or laziness. It was Genma that took Ranma to Jusenkyo. Because he was unable to read the pamphlet, which was in Chinese, he had no idea of the curses that existed there.
When splashed with cold water Genma transforms into a panda. When in this form, he uses signs with written messages on them to communicate. Although he often tries to rid himself of his curse, he doesn't seem to mind it as much as Jusenkyo's other victims. Mousse is a long-time friend of Shampoo, though she might not view it that way. He has been in love with her for most of his life, but she finds him annoying at best. He can't see very well without his glasses, often mistaking someone for something else. He comes to Nerima in search of this "new fiancé" that Shampoo has, and he stays to attempt to woo his sweetheart. Shampoo rebuked his advances when they were children and this still holds true by Amazon law, even if he manages to defeat Ranma in combat, but he remains persistent. Now a waiter at the Cat Café, he turns into a duck thanks to his own Jusenkyo curse. When in human form, his clothes contain weapons of drastic proportions, including needles, chains, swords, bombs, household appliances, and just about anything else imaginable. Ryouga is Ranma Saotome's eternal rival and a friend to him, the only one he has outright stated to truly consider as such, arguably the tritagonist, and one of the most powerful fighters in the series. Ryouga's most notable characteristic is that, like his parents (and even his entire family), he has no sense of direction whatsoever. He is unable to go the right way, often sticking to the letter of any directions given to him, regardless of whether the path eventually turns. He has an inability to understand even the simplest of directions or draw any legible maps, once running the wrong way at the start of a three-legged race or getting lost in Shampoo's house for hours; looking for the exit. He cannot even follow someone pointing in the correct direction.

Cologne is the great-grandmother of Shampoo. She accompanies Shampoo on her return to Japan, and opens the Cat Café in Furinkan. She is a contemporary of Happosai, and well over one hundred years old. She calls Ranma "bride-groom" and "son-in-law" due to her attempts to have him marry Shampoo, and just to watch him become enraged. She is a grand master of martial arts, and occasionally teaches Ranma and his rivals new techniques. She gets around by pogoing on a gnarled wooden staff that she sometimes uses as a weapon. She is the grand master of the Chinese Amazon martial arts, allowing her to manipulate water and ice, create whirlwinds using an opponent's aura against them, shatter inanimate objects with a simple touch, and touch pressure points to make a person feel like they are burning with even the slightest amount of heat. Ten years ago, on a training trip in the country, Genma stole Ukyo's father's okonomiyaki yatai (food cart), leaving her behind and breaking the arrangement he and her father made. However, before this Ranma and Ukyo were friends, though Ranma never knew she was a girl. Shamed and ridiculed by her peers, Ukyo decided she wouldn't like boys, dressed and lived as one, and devoted herself to okonomiyaki-style martial arts. After a heated battle, Ranma discovers her true sex. Meanwhile, she discovers that he does not get along with his "uncute" fiancée, Akane. They reconcile, and she falls in love with him again. Ranma still treats her as only an old friend, and her plots to win him over are usually less violent than those of his other suitors. The second daughter of Soun Tendo. The most important thing to her is money and she'd do anything to achieve it, including blackmailing her own family members. In some stories, she plays an important role in trying to extort money or placing bets just for her own amusement. She has a sarcastic, materialistic, egoistic, manipulative, sadistic and completely amoral attitude that is a sharp contrast to her older sister. She can in fact, be seen as the most intelligent character in both manga and anime.

Soun is the head of the Tendo household and one of the two families to practice Anything Goes Martial Arts. He's a widower, left to single-handedly take care of his three daughters. He has a large house that is occasionally in need of repairs due to the fights that take place there. While he owns his own dojo, students have not been explicitly shown. Community representatives frequently approach him when they have problems with unusual phenomena, so this may provide some of it, and he has rented out the dojo for social meetings. However he is shown to be quite careful with the expenses and gets upset when Nabiki spends his savings on expensive gifts, or when Ranma throws the dinner on the floor. In the anime, he spends most of his time playing Shogi with his old training partner Genma. Soun is eager for his daughter to say she loves Ranma, or the other way around, to continue the legacy of his school. He'll start announcing wedding plans if Ranma and Akane seem romantically involved. Soun is able to manifest himself as a ghostly, floating oni head, whenever he is upset, and often cries "Oh, the humanity!" in the anime. He generally assumes most incidents are Ranma's fault. He's shown as extremely protective of his children, and becomes sad if their affection is in doubt. Soun and Genma trained during their youths with the evil and perverted Happosai. The little man is THE master of Anything Goes Martial arts (Musabetsu Kakutō Ryū). He is also a panty thief and lecher beyond belief. In return for training, he berated and cajolled his two unwilling students into helping him with his panty raids and peeping expiditions. More often than not, they would end up humiliated or injured in the process. Once they had finally finished their training (ie: escaped) they were able to get on with their lives. That is, until Happosai returned to select the next Anything Goes master. What he found when he reached the Tendou Dojo was Ranma. Disgustingly enough, Happosai leched onto girl-type Ranma, even though he knows Ranma is a boy. Taking up residence at the Tendou Dojo, he began extending Ranma's training. He also began to expand his panty raids into the surrounding neighborhood, as well as the Tendou girls' bedrooms. Happosai is a tiny, yet immensely powerful martial artist. He usually wears a purple coverall, or occasionally a green bathing suit. When on his panty raids, he often wears a scarf as a mask. He is bald, with white fringes and a white moustache. Happosai is a master martial artist and deceptively strong for his size. His only real weakness is his perverted nature. Happosai would leap in front of a speeding train for a pair of girl's panties. Often times he is foiled by a well placed bra, and if he cannot lech onto some poor, unsuspecting girl, or Ranma, he goes into an addict's withdrawl syndrome. His power comes entirely from his lust, and can be easily defeated by denying it. Happosai is master of many magical martial arts attacks, although many are really just special effects. For example, his world feared 'Happo-dai-karin' (Happo Fire Blast) Technique is really just a firework and a match. He does however, posess several powerful special energy techniques, as well.

Shampoo is a Chinese Amazon from Joketsuzoku. She is one of the main three fiancées of [Ranma Saotome.](https://anilist.co/character/668/Ranma-Saotome) She is manipulative. She has repeatedly shown as devious and strategic as well as not being above scheming, play-acting, or completely ruthless behavior to advance her position towards the object of her attention. However, Shampoo does seem to enjoy having fun from the trouble she causes, particularly if it means she can get close to Ranma as a result.

Eldest of the Tendo girls and is the most gentle of the lot. She has graduated high school and spends most of her day looking after the Tendo household, acting as the family's substitute "matriarch" ever since her mother's untimely death; by cooking, cleaning and helping her family. Kasumi is portrayed as the perfect lady, with a very sweet, caring and self-sacrificing personality. Probably because of her extremely lovely nature, she is seldom affected by most of the crazy happenings around her and is wise in seeing through Nabiki's schemes.

Gosunkugi is a classmate of [Ranma](https://anilist.co/character/668/Ranma-Saotome) and [Akane.](https://anilist.co/character/669/Akane-Tendou) Like many of the other male characters in the series, Gosunkugi is in love with Akane even though he is too shy to tell her. He also realizes that he would never stand a chance against her other suitors like [Ryoga](https://anilist.co/character/2369/Ryouga-Hibiki) and [Kuno.](https://anilist.co/character/7699/Tatewaki-Kunou) Gosunkugi often tries to sneakily get the upperhand on his rivals, though often this backfires. Most of his classmates are completely unaware of him, and certainly unaware of his ambitions to move them out of the way so he might have a moment with Akane. Azusa Shiratori is the female half of "The Golden Pair of Kolhotz High School". She is well known for her obsession for collecting things that she regards as being cute and then giving them names, usually with a French origin. "Azusa" means "catalpa tree" while "Shiratori" means "white bird".

Azusa is very unintelligent (a "half-wit" in the words of Kuno) and strange even by the standards of the series. Shiratori is a kleptomaniac and feels the need to take random objects and people regardless of ownership. If Azusa is denied, she will throw a childish tantrum and resort to violence, until she either has the object returned or is shouted at to stop.

It is worthy of note that the "level" of Azusa's kleptomania varies between the manga and anime continuities, with her being only shown to have in her possession one object at a time in the manga (the only possible exception being her having "Françoise" and "Charlotte" at the same time, although Akane was technically in possession of "Charlotte" at the time). In contrast, the anime shows Azusa as having multiple objects in her possession at the same time, each with it's own name (Azusa will also greet each object individually in the morning and evening) all of which reside in her home.

Dr. Tofu Ono is the local chiropractor and often helps [Akane](https://anilist.co/character/669/Akane-Tendou) and [Ranma](https://anilist.co/character/668/Ranma-Saotome) when they have bumps, bruises or dislocated joints from their many fights. He is very knowledgeable about martial arts techniques although he is never seen practicing. Dr. Tofu is also deeply in love with [Kasumi Tendou.](https://anilist.co/character/3665/Kasumi-Tendou) In fact, whenever he is in her presence, his glasses fog over and he becomes nervous. He has injured quite a few of his patients when this happens. Dr. Tofu is well liked in the community and has many older clients. For a time he employed both [Genma Saotome](https://anilist.co/character/9913/Genma-Saotome) and [Shampoo](https://anilist.co/character/2421/Shampoo) as assistants. He is often seen in the company of his skeleton, Betty, which he carries and moves as if it were a real person. At one time Akane had a crush on Dr. Tofu and he would often give her advice and support.

Tatewaki Kuno is an upperclassman at Furinkan High and was the big man on campus – at least until Ranma came along. Hailing from a very wealthy family, he is also captain of the kendo club and wields both his fortune and sword with equal ease. Given to spouting off Shakespearesque poetry (he quotes Confucius in the Japanese original), he is madly in love with Akane. He also falls for Ranma’s female half and never realizes that she is really his mortal enemy in girl form. He once overhears her called by name, and attempts to write it down for future reference, but never makes a connection and continues to refer to her as a "goddess in pig-tails" for the entire series. [Azusa](https://anilist.co/character/9259/)'s skating partner. He is quite a womanizer and has kissed over a thousand women, often breaking up other figure skating pairs. Mikado at times actually seems to dislike Azusa and understands peoples frustration with her. He often loses his temper with her childish behavior, but often suffers for it.

The captain of the gymnastics team of the St. Bacchus' School for Girls, who is referred to as "The Black Rose," likely due to her signature theatrical style of exiting a scene by leaving behind a swirling trail of black roses accompanied by high-octave laughter.

Kodachi is an expert in Martial Arts Rhythmic Gymnastics, making her skilled in acrobatics and the use of balls, clubs, hoops, ribbons, and ropes as weapons. She is very agile, and she is not averse to using unorthodox methods in combat such as rigged weapons, explosives and various poisons.
