The first Japanese VOCALOID to be both developed and distributed by Crypton Future Media, Inc.. She was initially released in August 2007 for the VOCALOID2 engine and was the first member of the Character Vocal Series, as well as the seventh VOCALOID overall and the second VOCALOID2 vocal released to be released for the engine. Her voice is provided by the Japanese voice actress [Saki Fujita](https://anilist.co/staff/95504/Saki-Fujita).

There have since been numerous installments, such as additional voice libraries dubbed 'Append', as well as an upgrade for the VOCALOID3 engine, which contained an English vocal release. She received a VOCALOID4 update to her Japanese and English voicebanks in August 2016, as well as a Mandarin Chinese voicebank in September 2017.

Miku is considered the most popular and well known Vocaloid and the first to become a pop idol. The name of the title and the character of the software were chosen by combining Hatsu (初, first), Ne (音, sound), and Miku (未来, future) thus meaning "the first sound from the future." Her name was based on her concept of that when a sound is first spoken.

When KEI illustrated Miku, he was given a color scheme to work with (based on the YAMAHA synthesizers' signature blue-green colour) and was asked to draw Miku as an android. Crypton also provided KEI with Miku's detailed concepts, however, Crypton said it was not easy to explain what a "Vocaloid" was to him. KEI said he could not create an image of a "singing computer" at first, as he did not even know what a "synthesizer" was. It took him more than a month to complete the commission.

Hanasato Minori is a second-year student (introduced as a first-year student) at Miyamasuzaka Girls Academy. She's part of the idol group MORE MORE JUMP!

A pure and hard-working girl. Although she was the only one in MORE MORE JUMP! who had no experience as an idol, Minori went to prove herself through many activities and was finally accepted by the fans. Not long after, she was able to hold a one-man live concert that she had always dreamed of with her groupmates. She is now working hard to become a national idol that's big enough to perform a live concert at a dome.

Tenma Tsukasa is a third-year student (introduced as a second-year student) at Kamiyama High School. He's part of the musical show unit *Wonderlands×Showtime*.

Wonderlands×Showtime's troupe leader who aims to become the world's no.1 star. While working and gaining various experi- ences as a cast member at Phoenix Wonderland, Tsukasa felt a strong desire to see more of the world and further deepen his learning. He then finally decided to leave Wonder Stage with his fellow cast members and take the next step forward to- gether. He is Tenma Sakis older brother.

Yoisaki Kanade is a home-schooled student. She's the composer of the underground music circle *25-ji, Nightcord de.* going by the alias K.

Kanade experienced an event that left her traumatized as a musician. Ever since that incident she has been writing music to make others happy and started the music circle "25-ji, Nightcord de".

Azusawa Kohane is a second-year student (introduced as first-year student) at Miyamasuzaka Girls Academy. She's part of the street music group *Vivid BAD SQUAD*.

Initially, Kohane was a bashful girl who lacked self-confidence and didn't like being in public. One day, she witnessed a jam session with An Shiraishi and her fellow musicians. She found herself captivated by the rap music and intense tempo of their music.

Hoshino Ichika is a student at Miyamasuzaka Girls Academy. She's the guitarist and vocalist of Leo/need.

Despite her cool and stoic looks, Ichika is a kind girl who cares about her friends. She formed the band "Leo/need" together with her childhood friends Saki, Honami, and Shiho, and has achieved their dream of becoming professionals. Ichika is the guitarist and vocalist in Leo/need. She also writes the lyrics for Leo/need's original songs, and recently has been trying her hands at composing music using "Hatsune Miku."

Tenma Saki is a second-year stuident (introduced as a first-year student) at Miyamasuzaka Girls Academy. She's the pianist of Leo/need.

Saki is a bright and cheerful mood maker who always has a smile on her face. She is Leo/need's keyboardist. Due to her experience of having a weak body, being sick, and not being able to attend school often, she values her time together with others, celebrating and enjoying her youth, as well as being close to the hearts of those who are in pain. These are also re- flected in the music she writes.

Kamishiro Rui is a second-year student at Kamiyama High School. He is a member of the musical show unit Wonderlands x Showtime.

Rui and Kusanagi Nene are next-door neighbors and childhood friends. Rui was the one who recommended her to join the troupe. He manages their stage performances. Rui is also very skilled in inventing things and creates robots for the shows. Rui lives by his own set of rules, which causes people to consider him a weirdo. He is almost always smiling, and has a strange sense of humor that often causes others to misunderstand him. His behavior that causes people to avoid him includes using them as test dummies for his ideas and waterboarding them in swimming pools, as stated by Nene.

Mochizuki Honami is a second-year student (introduced as first-year student) at Miyamasuzaka Girls Academy. She's the drummer of Leo/need.

Honami is an honor student who is both athletic and smart, and also kind and gentle. She is Leo/need's drummer. Not wanting to hurt others, she often had trouble making decisions, but after joining Leo/need and doing band activities, she has finally mustered up the courage to make her very own decisions, little by little.

Hinomori Shiho is a second-year student (introduced as first year student) at Miyamasuzaka Girls Academy. She's the bassist of Leo/need.

Leo/need's bassist. Due to her stoic nature, especially when music is involved, she was often misunderstood by others as a loner who dislikes socializing with other people. She has a dream of becoming a professional, and cares a lot for the other members of Leo/need, who decided to chase after the same dream as hers and made it come true together. She is the younger sister of Hinomori Shizuku.

Momoi Airi is a second-year student at Miyamasuzaka Girls Academy. She is a member of the idol group MORE MORE JUMP!

Airi is strong-minded and comes across as pushy to some. According to Minori, she's strict but reliable. She is very protective of her friends and family, and hates bullies. She was more tomboyish as a child, but still retains her headstrong attitude.

Otori Emu is a first-year student at Miyamasuzaka Girls Academy. She is a member of the musical show unit Wonderlands x Showtime.

With a cheerful but naive personality, Emu is impulsive, acting on every idea that she comes up with, with a tendency to drag people around her into her plans. Emu has established her own personal catchphrase, "Wonderhoi!", which she seems to use as a way to motivate herself. She uses the catchphrase frequently, more often than not shouting it out after most of her sentences. When she's with others, she encourages and sometimes pushes them to shout it alongside her, possibly for the purpose of trying to motivate them with it. Her room is a reflection of her upbeat attitude, a mess of colors and patterns that she sees as representing happiness.

Haruka is very charismatic, being the most popular member of the former idol group, ASRUN. Haruka restricts herself on sweets and pastries, which, in response, causes cravings. She is attentive to the schedules and specials of pastry shops. Haruka is cheeky and bold, unafraid to talk back and to tease her friends. She is rather sporty, liking basketball, and as a child she was competitive, having competitions over who could eat faster. She also likes penguins, having tons of penguin merch.

Akiyama Mizuki is a first-year student at Kamiyama High School. They're the animator of the underground music circle 25-ji, Nightcord de., going by the alias "Amia". Mizuki is an animator and video maker who uploads their MVs online. They were captivated by Yoisaki Kanade's music upon listening to it. Kanade saw the MV Mizuki made and invited them to the circle. It seems that they stay secretive, to an extent, from an understanding that everyone has things they want to keep hidden.

Aoyagi Toya is a first-year student at Kamiyama High School. He is a member of the street music group Vivid BAD SQUAD.

Toya's father raised him exclusively with classical music, learning the piano and violin. He had an extraordinary sense of music due to being educated since a very young age. His father, however, used to isolate and force him to study classical music 24/7, causing him to despise his father and by association the entirety of classical music. As such, he started performing everything else but classical music to spite his father. Toya is silent and calm but has a strong mind. He has trouble communicating with other people beside Akito.

Shinonome Ena is a second-year student at Kamiyama High School who only attends the night classes. She's the illustrator of the underground music circle 25-ji, Nightcord de. going by the alias "Enanan".

Ena's father was a famous artist. She often draws and posts her drawings online. She has a great sense of social media and would like to get more popular. Yoisaki Kanade saw some of her illustrations online and invited her to join her circle as an illustrator.

Shinonome Akito is a first-year student at Kamiyama High School. He is a member of the street music group Vivid BAD SQUAD.

Akito has been a street musician since middle school. He looks up to Shiraishi An's father, who was a street musician as well and keeps on training to surpass them. He used to sing together with Toya under the name "BAD DOGS" before joining with An and Kohane to become Vivid BAD SQUAD. Akito appears to be an easy-going guy at first. However, his personality drastically changes when he's dancing, becoming a hot-blooded and passionate person.

Asahina Mafuyu is a second-year student at Miyamasuzaka Girls Academy. She's the lyricist of the underground music circle 25-ji, Nightcord de. going by the alias "Yuki".

Mafuyu is an honor student and the only one in her group who regularly attends school. She constantly receives good grades and is a member of the archery club along with the student council. She is said to excel in both academics and sports, hence people often put high hopes for her to excel in everything she does. However, not all is what it seems.

Luka Megurine is the third Vocaloid2 in Crypton's character series.

Unlike the previous Vocaloids, Luka can sing in both Japanese and English. The name "Megurine" can be read in Japanese as the "sound that travels (the whole wide world)," and the name Luka invokes the homonymous Japanese words of "nagare" (flowing) and "ka" (song) or "kaori" (scent).

Yuu Asakawa provides Luka's 'cool, yet husky feminine voice'. Luka was designed by the Japanese illustrator Kei, who had previously created the designs for Hatsune Miku and Kagamine Rin and Len. However, unlike previous mascots in the series, her costume is not based on a school uniform. Luka serves to bridge the gap between both languages and has proven to be her appeal as a vocaloid.

Thus, sake is her character item. Her signature color is red. It was said that she is often as the "older sister" type.

Wat) described Rin & Len as two bodies with one soul.
She has had umerous installments since such as additional voice banks dubbed 'Append', an update to the VOCALOID4 engine, and an English vocal. Rin is designed to be a deep sounding teenage female, and the female counterpart for the Len vocal also supplied within the package.

When the Kagamines were being recorded in 2007, their names were not yet decided. Their given names of Rin and Len were said to be based on "right" and "left" according to Asami Shimoda. She later confirmed in an interview after the Append release that the names were based on Ken and Rin from Hokuto no Ken, derived from a discussion about names that were familiar from her childhood.
Their surname was derived from the developing code combining Kagami (鏡, mirror) and Ne (音, sound). This refers to an "echo", which is a sound being bounced back to the user from a different direction caused by soundwaves hitting a surface at a direction that reflects it back the way it came.
